Unveiling the Secrets of Ancient Amphipolis: A Journey into the Past

Imagine standing atop the majestic Amphipolis acropolis, gazing upon a landscape that holds untold stories of a vibrant ancient city. This is the captivating world that Professor Dimitris Damaskos, a classical archaeology expert, has dedicated thousands of hours to exploring.

For over two decades, Professor Damaskos has delved into the mysteries of Amphipolis and other Macedonian sites, but his focus has intensified since 2019 with the ongoing excavations in cooperation with the Serres Ephorate of Antiquities.

"The thrill of discovery in Amphipolis is unparalleled. It's an inexhaustible treasure trove, yet so much remains unexplored within the finite scope of an archaeologist's lifetime," Damaskos shared with enthusiasm before his departure to Germany to showcase recent finds.

In an exclusive interview with Kathimerini, Damaskos highlighted the allure of Amphipolis, a city that played a pivotal role in ancient history. "It's tantalizing to uncover the past of a city that was central to major events like the Peloponnesian War and Alexander's Eastern Campaign. Amphipolis was a commercial, cultural, and strategic powerhouse, built by the Athenians in 437 BC, connecting Attica to Thrace and Macedonia."

The current excavation is centered around a temple dedicated to a goddess, built in the 4th century BC, when King Philip II incorporated Amphipolis into the Macedonian kingdom. The findings suggest worship of Artemis Tauropolos, a goddess associated with initiation and the transition to adulthood. However, this theory awaits confirmation through an on-site inscription.

"For girls, adolescence meant marriage and motherhood, while for boys, it was a time of intellectual growth and military training to become worthy citizens. The cult of Artemis was pivotal, safeguarding the community's future potential," explained Professor Damaskos.

Excavations have revealed remnants of cultic and construction activities, including a Roman-era building filled with vessels of various sizes, likely stored for commercial use. "Amphipolis' harbor was Macedonia's second most important, with trade connections to Asia Minor, the Black Sea, and Italy," he added.

Beyond the monuments to the dead, the excavations offer a glimpse into the daily lives of Amphipolis' residents. Clay figurines, children's toys, and everyday items paint a picture of a thriving community.

While Amphipolis gained global fame with the discovery of the Kasta Hill burial mound, the current excavations aim to go beyond the dead, revealing the lives, customs, and beliefs of the ancient city's inhabitants.

"Tombs mark the end of life, but we know little about the lives of those buried. Amphipolis became famous due to a fascinating funerary monument, but we must remember that Alexander's connection to Amphipolis was not as his final resting place, but as the site where the Macedonian army gathered at the start of his campaign, and as a place associated with his wish to be linked to the goddess Tauropolos," said Damaskos.

"We excavate Amphipolis to learn about the lives of those who passed through, famous or unknown. We must also consider the lives of the Macedonian kings who resided here after Alexander. Where did they live? Which buildings did they occupy?" he added, leaving us with intriguing questions to ponder.
